Amrut, Single Malt Indian Whisky, 2019
Amrut proved that single malt didn't have to come from Scotland. It's distilled in Bangalore from Indian six-row barley grown in the foothills of the Himalayas, then matured in a tropical climate that does in a few years what a Scottish warehouse takes a decade to do. The angel's share runs somewhere around 11 to 12 percent a year, against roughly 2 percent in Scotland, which means fast, intense extraction from the cask and a whisky that punches well above its years. Bottled at 46 percent and non-chill filtered. Neat, with a few drops of water.
