Azelia, Barolo Bricco Fiasco, 2008
Azelia's flagship single-vineyard from Castiglione Falletto, in a classical vintage now nicely settled. Luigi Scavino — cousin of Enrico of Paolo Scavino, different family branch — makes Barolo in the modernist-traditional middle: real structure, real terroir transparency, no concessions to fashion. Bricco Fiasco is the family's heart vineyard, replanted to Nebbiolo by Luigi's grandfather Lorenzo in the 1940s and bottled separately starting in 1978 — one of Barolo's pioneering single-cru bottlings. The 2008 vintage is now firmly classical in profile: structured, perfumed, balanced, beginning to show the tertiary complexity that defines mature Barolo. Eighteen years on, it's in a beautiful window — primary fruit settling into rose, tar, and dried herb, with tannins still present but well-integrated.
