Bartolo Mascarello, Barolo, 2010

The traditional Barolo benchmark, from a legendary vintage. Bartolo Mascarello's Barolo is the classical four-vineyard assemblage Bartolo championed his whole life — Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Rue in the Barolo commune plus Rocche in La Morra — co-fermented and aged in large Slavonian botti, with no temperature control and roughly 50 days on the skins. Daughter Maria Teresa took over in 2005 and makes the wine exactly as her father did. The 2010 is one of Piedmont's great modern vintages, marrying power with precision, and fifteen years on it's just stepping into its long peak: tar, dried rose, sour cherry, leather, dried orange peel, anise and forest floor over taut, still-firm tannins. A library wine you can either drink with a long carafe tonight or cellar for another two decades.
