Brezza, Barolo Cannubi, 1995
Brezza's Cannubi from a structured classical vintage, now thirty years on and at full resolution. Cannubi is the sandy-limestone hill that gave Barolo its most perfumed signature — a cru so celebrated it's often called the Romanee-Conti of the Langhe. 1995 was a serious, well-built vintage that always demanded patience, and patience has been rewarded here: Enzo Brezza (godson of Bartolo Mascarello) brought the wine up traditionally in Slavonian botti, and three decades in bottle have done what time does to great Nebbiolo — fruit has gone from cherry to dried cherry to something almost smoky, the tannins have melted, the perfume has bloomed. Fully mature, drinking now, won't get better. Special-occasion territory.
