Patrice Rion's Bons Bâtons sits in the commune of Gilly-lès-Cîteaux, adjoining Chambolle-Musigny, on a 0.76-hectare parcel of clay-limestone laced with gravel washed down by a prehistoric river — and that gravel gives the wine an individuality you don't usually find at the appellation level. Patrice and Michèle started the domaine in 1990; son Maxime joined in 2005 and has been fully in charge since 2015, refining what was already one of the more reliable addresses for honest, terroir-driven Côte de Nuits. 2023 brought ripe, perfumed reds — a vintage where the gentler appellations really shine. Drink it young while the fruit is sparkling.
