Domaine Michele & Patrice Rion, Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Terres Blanches, 2023

Here's a fun curveball: despite the Nuits-Saint-Georges name, this is a white. Les Terres Blanches ('the white earths') is named for its pocket of pale, sandy, oolitic limestone soil up the slope in Premeaux, and Patrice Rion planted it to roughly 90% Chardonnay with a splash of Pinot Blanc. White wine from Nuits-Saint-Georges is genuinely rare, which makes this a conversation piece as much as a delicious bottle. The bunches are whole-pressed and aged in oak (about 20% new) before assembly in tank. The 2023 is young and fresh. A distinctive, off-the-beaten-path white Burgundy for the curious.
