Domaine Pierre Gelin, Fixin 1er Cru Clos Napoleon Monopole, 2005

Clos Napoleon is Fixin's greatest vineyard, a premier cru monopole owned outright by Domaine Pierre Gelin, and 2005 was a vintage worth saving it for. Where the firmer 1999 leans classic and structured, 2005 came from a long, warm summer that gave riper fruit and rounder, sweeter tannins, all while keeping its acidity intact. Two decades on, this old-vine Pinot Noir has grown supple and complete, the structure of a great vintage now folded into velvet. It's mature and drinking gorgeously, with the depth and length that made 2005 one of Burgundy's benchmark red years. A monopole from a legendary vintage, and there isn't much of it anywhere.
