Duroche, Gevrey Chambertin Champ, 2019
Pierre Duroché has become one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most quietly coveted young names — sixth-generation, classical in style, restrained where many neighbors push for weight. The Champ bottling comes from two parcels in the northern part of the village, planted in 1969 and 1973 on limestone and blue marne; at around 40-plus-year-old vines, it's the largest of his mostly micro lieu-dit cuvées and the one regulars hunt down for its refinement and detailed minerality. The 2019 vintage was concentrated and structured in the Côte de Nuits — ripe but built on real acidity — and at six years old this Champ is just beginning to open, with another decade and more of evolution still in front of it.
