Elvio Cogno, Barolo Ravera, 2011
Ravera is the flagship cru of Novello, the southernmost Barolo village — a high-elevation hill of calcareous-clay soils that climbs to roughly 400 meters and gives Nebbiolo a distinctive cool-climate signature: lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity, structured tannins. Elvio Cogno founded his estate at the top of this hill in 1990, and the family (now run by son-in-law Valter Fissore and daughter Nadia) holds the largest position in Ravera by far. The 2011 was a warm, more forward Piedmont vintage, which has worked in this wine's favor — fourteen years on, the high-altitude freshness is keeping the generosity in check. Mid-window drinking, with the next decade still in front of it.
