Flavien Nowack, Champagne 'Les Arpents Rouges' Extra Brut, 2020
The Nowack family has roots in Vandières dating to 1795, originally as brickmakers before becoming Champagne producers after WWI. Today, Frederic Nowack and his son Flavien run the 3.6-hectare estate. Flavien took over management in 2011 after training in Burgundy, including at the renowned Coche-Dury in Meursault. Les Arpents Rouges comes from a single parcel in Vandières planted in 1987 on clay sandstone soils—historically used for still red wine, hence the name. The blend is 60% Pinot Meunier and 40% Chardonnay, fermented spontaneously in 228L barrels with no chaptalization, fining, filtering, or added sulfur at any point.
