Giulia Negri, Langhe Pinot Nero La Tartufaia, 2017
Pinot Noir in Barolo country sounds like heresy until you see where it is planted. Giulia Negri's vines sit on the Serradenari hill above La Morra, among the highest ground in the zone, where the air is cooler and Burgundy's grape suddenly makes sense; she spent time in Burgundy learning how to handle it. La Tartufaia is the truffle wood alongside the vines, and it lends the wine its name; the Pinot Nero itself sits on the estate's cooler, north-facing ground. The result is unmistakably Piedmontese Pinot: red cherry and raspberry, dried rose, a savory earthy undertow, with lighter tannins and more acid snap than the Langhe usually gives you. 2017 was a warm, early vintage, which lends this one plenty of fruit and easy generosity. It is drinking beautifully right now, and it takes a slight chill well.
