Giuseppe Rinaldi, Barolo Tre Tine, 2021
Three plots, one wine, zero shortcuts. Tre Tine literally means 'three vats,' for the three lots — Ravera, Cannubi San Lorenzo and Le Coste — that go into it — Rinaldi's old-school answer to Barolo's single-vineyard arms race, and proof that a blend can be the most characterful bottle on the table. It's the estate's most immediately savory Barolo: sour cherry and dried rose, tea leaf, salt and iron, with tannin that's firm but willing to talk to you early. The method hasn't budged in generations — native yeasts, long macerations, big old Slavonian casks. The 2021 vintage brought a classic, cool-edged season to Piedmont, giving this lift and precision on top of its usual grip. It drinks well sooner than the single crus, which is exactly the point, though it will happily go the distance too.
