Gosset, Champagne Grand Millesime, 2012
Gosset has been making wine in Ay since 1584, which makes it the oldest house in Champagne — older than the idea of Champagne as a sparkling wine at all. Their signature move is to block malolactic fermentation, keeping the fruit bright and the acidity brisk, and nowhere is that clearer than in a vintage bottling like the 2012. And 2012 is a vintage worth seeking out: frost and mildew slashed the crop, but a warm, dry late summer rescued it and delivered ripe, healthy, concentrated fruit with real tension. Two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Pinot Noir, aged around six years on the lees, this is powerful and precise all at once. Drinking beautifully now, with the structure to keep evolving well into the next decade.
