Gunderloch, Riesling GG Hipping, 2024 [Pre-Arrival ETA 7/15]
Hipping is Gunderloch's smallest grand cru, carved from an extremely steep parcel of the Roter Hang, the five-kilometer stretch of blood-red, iron-rich slate that rises above the Rhine between Nackenheim and Nierstein. This is the floral one of the trio. The signature Roter Hang character is all here - herbal, stony, savory, sun-soaked - but Hipping adds an exotic lift of lilac and jasmine over the top. In the mouth it's firm and straight, locked in place by a tight grid of acidity, structured like sculpted stone. Johannes Hasselbach farms organically, ferments wild, and takes it to total dryness. A grand cru that shows the red slope's perfumed, high-tension side.
