Gunderloch, Riesling Kabinett "Jean-Baptiste", 2024 [Pre-Arrival ETA 7/15]
The estate was founded in 1890 by Mainz banker Carl Gunderloch, and the cuvee 'Jean-Baptiste' is named for the character Jean-Baptiste Gunderloch in Carl Zuckmayer's play 'Der froehliche Weinberg'. This is Gunderloch's classic off-dry Kabinett and one of the great everyday pleasures in the German section. The fruit comes off the lower terraces of the grand cru Pettenthal, so there's real pedigree behind the price. It's light, low in alcohol, and beautifully balanced - just enough sweetness to round the edges, more than enough acidity to keep it snapping. Chill it down and pour it on a hot afternoon, or set it against a bowl of something spicy and watch it do exactly what off-dry Riesling was born to do.
