Immich-Batterieberg, Riesling Batterieberg, 2023 [Pre-Arrival ETA 7/15]
In the 1840s, Carl August Immich looked at a wall of rock too steep to plant and decided to blast it apart with explosives, and the vineyard that resulted still carries the name Batterieberg. This is the estate's namesake single-cru dry Riesling, grown on gray slate and quartzite on some of the Mosel's most vertiginous terraces. The vines are around 80 years old and ungrafted, and Gernot Kollmann farms them organically, ferments with wild yeast, and raises the wine in old wood. It's the most complex and structured wine in the range, crystalline but powerful all at once. Dynamite history in a glass, and worth the wait. [Pre-arrival: expected to arrive mid-July.]
