Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, L'Hermitage Rouge, 2022 (1.5L)

Jean-Louis Chave’s Hermitage Rouge is not a single-vineyard wine—it’s something even rarer: a master blend of the Hermitage hill’s most important lieux-dits, including Bessards, Méal, L’Hermite, Rocoules, and others. Each contributes something: Bessards gives granite spine and age-worthy structure; Le Méal offers rich fruit and depth; L’Hermite lends perfume and grace. The wine is vinified with native yeasts, aged in large foudres, and bottled with minimal intervention to preserve both site and soul.

The 2022 vintage brings intense concentration, thanks to a warm growing season with small, thick-skinned berries—but crucially, it also retained freshness and lift, thanks to cool nights and Chave’s unwavering focus on balance. Expect notes of blackcurrant, olive tapenade, violets, crushed rock, and smoked herbs, with a powerful but impeccably composed frame. The tannins are firm and noble, the finish seemingly endless.

This is a wine for the cellar, built to evolve over 20–30 years. But for those who open it early (with a long decant), it already whispers of its future greatness.
