Julian Haart, Riesling Rote Erden, 2023
Julian Haart's family has made wine in Piesport since 1337, but this Riesling doesn't come from the Mosel—it comes from a unique vineyard swap with Klaus Peter Keller. Since 2018, Haart has managed Keller's Rote Erden parcel in Rheinhessen while Keller tends Haart's Schubertslay in the Mosel—a collaboration between two of Germany's most celebrated Riesling producers. The marl, limestone, and red clay soils of Rote Erden produce a wine distinctly different from Haart's Mosel bottlings: denser, more explosive, with glycerin-rich power alongside the sleek energy that defines his style. Fermented with ambient yeasts in old oak Fuder and stainless steel, with minimal intervention throughout. The 2023 captures the terroir's signature intensity in a dry, focused frame. A fascinating expression from an extraordinary partnership.
