Julien Sunier, Fleurie, 2023
Julien Sunier got his start working for Christophe Roumier in Burgundy, and the fingerprint never washed off. He farms high-elevation granite parcels in Beaujolais organically and vinifies in the traditional semi-carbonic way, which gives his Cru Bojo a cool, refined edge that most Gamay never finds. His Fleurie is the floral one: perfumed, light on its feet, with cool-toned red fruit and a fine-grained, almost Pinot-like frame. It can be a little reserved when you first pour it, so give it two minutes in the glass and let it unfurl. Sunier has been a Flatiron favorite for years, and the 2023 is a very good reminder why.
