Lukas Hammelmann, Riesling Spatlese Schlossberg, 2020
A counter-narrative to mass-produced Pfalz Riesling—from terraced vineyards that once covered a hundred hectares but now total just two, with Lukas Hammelmann farming one. Hammelmann established his winery in 2016 as a meticulous scholar of Pfalz wine history, working five hectares organically around Zeiskam and Hochstadt. His approach is radically artisanal: extended lees contact, no fining, no filtration, minimal sulfur, and complete malolactic fermentation that adds textural depth absent from conventional Spätlese bottlings. The Schlossberg site near the historic Haardt mountains features sandstone, loam, and loess soils on a warm, sun-angled slope, producing Riesling of superb delineation and power. The 2020 vintage was warm and sunny across the Pfalz, with harvest beginning in late August, yielding fragrant, balanced wines. This Spätlese offers the richness of riper fruit alongside the complexity of natural winemaking. Drink now or cellar through 2030.
