Max Kilburg, Ohligsberg Pinot Noir, 2023
Mosel Pinot Noir is the new sentence everyone wants to learn, and Max Kilburg is one of the few writing it well. Max is a 20th-generation Mosel winemaker farming the family's Geierslay estate plus a tiny micro-project of old-vine Grand Cru parcels (about 1.2 hectares total). He trained with Julian Haart, and you can taste the rigor. This Pinot is only his third vintage from Ohligsberg, a steep, blue-slate Grand Cru in Wintrich, off old vines his father planted in the mid-1980s. The style splits the difference between Fourrier-style fleshiness and Mosel transparency: vivid red fruit, slate-driven minerality, weightless texture, and tannins so fine they almost vanish. Rare, improbable, and very compelling.
