Miani, Malvasia, 2023
Enzo Pontoni farms as though he holds a personal grudge against easy yields. Miani is one of Italy's great white wine addresses and also one of its smallest, worked largely by Pontoni's own hands across steep parcels of ponca, the marl-and-sandstone bedrock that gives Friuli's Colli Orientali its backbone. Malvasia is a comparatively rare bottling in a lineup better known for Sauvignon and Friulano, and it carries the house signature: density, weight, and a saline snap that keeps all that concentration honest. Look for stone fruit, dried herbs, a faintly waxy texture and a long mineral finish. It is a big white, but it is not a soft one. Give it a large glass, do not serve it too cold, and let it unwind over an evening. These bottles reached us from a private cellar.
