Montevertine, Le Pergole Torte, 2022

If Italy has a Burgundy, Le Pergole Torte is its grand cru. Sergio Manetti planted Sangiovese on the high-elevation, limestone-rich slopes of Montevertine in Radda in Chianti in 1968, then famously walked away from the Chianti Classico designation, choosing to bottle his single-varietal Sangiovese as Toscana IGT instead. Decades later, Le Pergole Torte is one of the most legendary wines in Italy — and the only 100% Sangiovese in the Montevertine lineup. Martino Manetti and winemaker Paolo Salvi continue the tradition: native-yeast fermentation in the estate's original concrete vats, eighteen months in large Slavonian oak, then a final six months in older French barriques. The 2022 is a young giant — sour cherry, dried rose, blood orange, tobacco leaf, balsamic herbs, fine-knit tannins, and the laser-focused acidity that's the calling card of great traditional Sangiovese. Decant it now for a glimpse; cellar it for decades for the full story.
