Palladino, Barolo Ornato, 2016
Ornato sits on the steep southwestern flank of Serralunga d'Alba, and it makes Barolo with shoulders. Palladino has been working this commune since 1974, when Piero and his cousin Maurilio bought the old 18th-century Cappellano cellar and set about acquiring vineyard land from locals who were not especially thrilled about newcomers. Nothing about the winemaking chases fashion: long fermentations, big old Slavonian botti, and structure built for the long haul. Now a decade on from the harvest, the 2016 is just beginning to unwind, with tar, rose and dried cherry sitting on top of the iron grip Serralunga is famous for. Traditional single-site Barolo of this age and provenance does not turn up often, and we went to Italy to track these bottles down ourselves. Give it a long decant, or give it a few more years and thank yourself later.
