Pauline Collin Bereche, Champagne Exra Brut Ludes 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes, 2020
An important new voice in grower Champagne, and this 2020 is a fabulous follow-up to the breakout 2019. Pauline Collin comes from a long line of growers in the high-elevation village of Ludes; after stints at Krug and Ruinart and alongside her husband Raphael Bereche, she began reclaiming her family's finest old-vine parcels to farm, vinify, and bottle herself under the credo of one wine, one terroir, one vintage. This Ludes 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is drawn from just two hectares of old vines: a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and a touch of Petit Meslier, that last grape lending aromatic lift, spice, and a bracing edge. Classic, poised, and finely nuanced, with textural presence and a long, vibrant finish. Quantities are very limited.
