Prunotto, Barolo Bussia Cavalieri Bottling, 1978
A double rarity: the legendary 1978 vintage from Prunotto's Bussia, in a special Cavalieri del Tartufo selection bottling. The Cavalieri del Tartufo, Alba's "Knights of the Truffle," began in 1975 selecting a handful of producers' wines each year for a special-honor labeling, drawing from bottles that had aged quietly in the cantina and showed exceptional pedigree. Combine that with 1978, one of the towering classical Barolo vintages of the twentieth century, Prunotto's Bussia (the cru Beppe Colla put on the map in 1961), and Colla's hyper-traditional approach (50-day macerations, big botti), and you have a true museum bottle. Forty-seven years on, the once-impenetrable 1978s have finally relaxed and opened. Drink with patience, ceremony and a slow carafe.
