Prunotto, Barolo Riserva, 1980

Beppe Colla-era Prunotto at full maturity, a museum piece from a transformative era. From 1956 to 1994, Beppe Colla and his brother Tino ran Prunotto, and they did nothing less than reshape modern Barolo, inspired by Burgundy to bottle the first single-vineyard Barolo (Bussia, in 1961). Their style was uncompromisingly traditional: long macerations, large Slavonian botti, fruit and soil first, never the cellar. This 1980 Riserva carries that signature throughout. Forty-five years on, the wine is fully resolved into the secondary and tertiary register: dried fruit, tobacco, leather, truffle, fading sweet earth. A connoisseur's bottle from the Prunotto era that put traditional Barolo on the world map. Drink with care and a slow carafe.
