Quinta do Noval, Vintage Port, 2000
From terraced schist vineyards perched above the confluence of the Douro and Pinhão rivers, Quinta do Noval has produced great Port since the early 18th century—and the 2000 vintage represents one of the era’s most celebrated declarations. All Noval Vintage Ports come exclusively from estate-grown fruit (unique among top Port houses), foot-trodden in traditional stone lagares and aged 18 months in oak and chestnut casks. The vineyards, documented in land registries since 1715, yield conservatively from infertile schist that’s more rock than soil. The 2000 is incredibly concentrated—blackberry, cassis, chocolate, and licorice—with sweet tannins and superb acidity suggesting decades of evolution ahead. Decant two to three hours before serving. This estate also produces the legendary Nacional from ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines; the Vintage bottling offers a window into that same extraordinary terroir.
