Sarget de Gruaud Larose, Saint Julien, 2020

Château Gruaud Larose traces its origins to 1725, when Abbot Gruaud began planting vines in Saint-Julien. The estate earned Second Grand Cru Classé status in the 1855 Classification and has been owned by the Merlaut family since 1997, who introduced sustainable and organic methods. Sarget is the second wine, named for a family who owned part of the estate before selling to the Cordiers in 1917. The 2020 vintage saw Saint-Julien emerge as one of the left bank's most successful appellations—the slightly higher clay content helped vines manage drought stress better than pure gravel sites. This blend (48% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc) ages 14 months with 15% new oak. Light tannins, nice freshness, crisp fruit—an accessible introduction to Gruaud Larose's pursuit of elegance and balance.
