Soldera, Toscana Sangiovese Case Basse, 2020
Gianfranco Soldera walked away from the Brunello consorzio in 2013, which is why one of Montalcino's most legendary wines now goes out the door labeled simply as Toscana Sangiovese. The wine did not change; only the paperwork did. Case Basse is farmed more like a nature reserve than a vineyard, with the famous garden, the hedgerows and the insects treated as part of the system rather than a nuisance, and the winemaking is unbendingly traditional: long fermentations, years in large old Slavonian casks, no new oak allowed anywhere near it. Gianfranco died in 2019 and his family has carried the estate on exactly as he left it, which is to say without compromise. This is Sangiovese at its most uncompromising and long-lived, and it has decades ahead of it.
