Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Etna Rosso, 2024
Tenuta delle Terre Nere was founded in 2000 by Marco de Grazia, who had previously helped revolutionize Barolo as one of the "Barolo Boys" in the 1980s. He declared Mount Etna "the Burgundy of the Mediterranean" when the region was still largely unknown and has since validated that claim. The estate farms approximately 45 hectares across nine contradas (crus) on Etna's northern slopes, between 600 and 1,000 meters elevation. The volcanic soils—black pumice and ash from different lava flows—give each contrada distinct character. This Etna Rosso blends Nerello Mascalese (95-98%) with Nerello Cappuccio from vines ranging from young plantings to pre-phylloxera centenarians. Aged 16 months in large French oak, it delivers what makes Etna compelling: bright cherry fruit, floral notes, fine tannins, and refreshing acidity despite the southern latitude.
