Vino Gross, Colles Sauvignon Blanc, 2020

What is this wine?
Vino Gross is the project of Maria and Michael Gross, who farm organically in Štajerska (Styria), Slovenia, right on the Austrian border. The family originally hails from Austria’s Südsteiermark, a region famed for elegant Sauvignon Blanc, and their Slovenian vineyards share the same steep hillsides and mineral soils. Colles—Latin for “hills”—is their Sauvignon Blanc from carefully selected parcels, fermented with native yeasts and aged on the lees for texture and depth.

Why get this wine?
This is Sauvignon Blanc with real character: less overtly tropical than New World styles, more refined and mineral than most French examples. Vino Gross combines Styrian elegance with Slovenian authenticity, making it a superb option for drinkers seeking freshness, precision, and terroir expression. It’s artisanal, distinctive, and outstanding value compared with top Austrian Sauvignon Blancs.

What does this wine taste like?
Crisp and aromatic, with notes of citrus, gooseberry, and white peach, layered with herbs, elderflower, and a chalky mineral streak. The palate is focused and textural, with lively acidity and a long, clean finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Delicious now with seafood, goat cheese, asparagus, or light salads. It will also gain complexity with 3–5 years in bottle. Serve chilled.
