Vinous Obscura, "Merci Andre Jacquinet", 2022

Vinous Obscura is the project of Jeff Vejr, "The Winesman," who began making wine in 2013 with a mission to champion obscure grape varieties in Oregon. This cuvée is named for André Jacquinet, the Swiss grape breeder who created Garanoir at a research facility in 1970. The wine is a co-fermentation of Garanoir (a Gamay x Reichensteiner cross) with a splash of Regent, sourced from two experimental nursery vineyards—one in the Columbia Gorge, one in Forest Grove in the northern Willamette Valley. Both varieties were selected for disease resistance, making them well-suited to organic farming. Native yeast fermentation, no additives, minimal intervention. At just 11.2% alcohol, this is light, fresh, and utterly unique. For those seeking something genuinely different.
