Altos las Hormigas, Malbec 'Reserve', 2022
The wine that put Altos las Hormigas's terroir philosophy in a bottle you can drink any night. The Reserve blends roughly 80% high-altitude Gualtallary with 20% Paraje Altamira fruit, both from calcareous, limestone-laced Uco Valley soils. Tellingly, the estate ditched small oak barrels back in 2012 in favor of huge untoasted foudres, here about 75% of the wine ages 18 months in 3,500-liter foudres, the rest in bare concrete, then another year in bottle, all to keep the Malbec fruit pure and vivid. The result is a complete, structured Malbec with mountain freshness and real depth that punches well above its weight.
