Arnaldo Caprai is the producer most responsible for putting Umbria's Montefalco on the map, and this Riserva is a more polished, age-worthy step up from the estate's standard Rosso. It's Sangiovese-based, blended with Merlot and a portion of the local Sagrantino, the fierce, tannic grape Caprai did more than anyone to revive. The Riserva sees around 20 months in French oak plus additional bottle age before release, which knits together the Sangiovese's red-fruited lift, the Merlot's flesh, and Sagrantino's grip. It's a structured, full-bodied red built for the table and capable of further aging.
