Badenhorst, Red Blend, 2021
Adi Badenhorst is one of the iconic figures of South Africa's Swartland revolution, farming Kalmoesfontein on the Paardeberg with his cousin Hein and producing wines that fuse old-world restraint with Swartland's wild, sun-baked soul. The Family Red is the flagship blend — in 2021, Shiraz leads with Cinsault, Tinta Barocca, Mourvedre, and Grenache filling out the chorus. Whole-bunch ferments, foot-stomping, long skin contact, then nearly a year and a half in large old oak. The result is complex and brooding: black cherry, lavender, cracked pepper, licorice, fennel, and a stony reduction that screams Swartland granite. Built for the long haul, but already singing.
