Bernhard Huber, Alte Reben Spatburgunder, 2023
Bernhard Huber was nicknamed the Godfather of German Pinot Noir - a great friend of Jacques Seysses at Domaine Dujac, and a man whose wines were often mistaken for fine Burgundy. The Malterdingen estate sits on limestone soils similar to the Cote d'Or, in a cool corner of Baden where Cistercian monks from Burgundy planted Pinot some 700 years ago. Bernhard passed in 2014; son Julian now runs the show with quiet authority. This Alte Reben bottling pulls from seven parcels of 50-to-70-year-old vines, ages 16 months in fuder, with only a small portion new, and consistently sets the benchmark for German Pinot. The 2023 is mouth-filling, juicy, elegant - and built to age for 15 years or more.
