Canalicchio di Sopra, Rosso di Montalcino, 2024
Rosso di Montalcino is Brunello's earlier-drinking sibling — same Sangiovese, same vineyards, but younger and aimed straight at the dinner table. At Canalicchio di Sopra, the Ripaccioli family's Rosso is essentially a baby Brunello drawn primarily from their northern-zone Canalicchio vineyards (calcareous clay), with a small portion from Montosoli (free-draining galestro) in some vintages, with shorter aging that keeps the fruit fresh and the texture supple. The 2024 is a current release built for now: bright red cherry, herbal lift, fine-grained tannins, and the kind of energetic acidity that makes Sangiovese such a natural with food. A great way into one of Montalcino's most respected northern-zone producers without waiting on the Brunellos to come around.
