Cardedu, Cannonau di Sardegna 'Caladu', 2021

Cannonau from the Loi family in Ogliastra, eastern Sardinia's wildest province. Cardedu is a traditionalist estate working with native grapes; the vineyards for Caladu sit in the Jerzu growing zone, historically among the most prized terroirs on the island for this grape (which most of the world knows as Grenache). Decomposed granitic soils give the wine real zip alongside the sun-baked Mediterranean fruit. Fermentation is with native yeasts; farming is dry, without herbicides or pesticides. Caladu is Sardinian for sunset, and the wine carries that warm, dusky character — fleshy red fruit, smoke, garrigue, fine grain tannins — with four years now in bottle softening the edges. The most complex of the family's Cannonau range.
