Chateau Chantecler, Pauillac, 2017
A genuine Pauillac from a producer most people have never heard of. Château Chantecler is the personal project of Yannick Mirande, whose family's vines were largely sold to Mouton-Rothschild in 2004. Yannick held back roughly a hectare — formerly the second wine of the old Château La Fleur Milon — and has been making his own Pauillac from it ever since. Production is tiny. The 2017 is a classic Pauillac blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, made in the same gravelly Médoc terroir that anchors the village's blue-chip names, just on a fraction of the scale. The result is a real Pauillac at the price of a not-real Pauillac: cassis, cedar, graphite and that distinctive iron grip on the finish. A hand-find for anyone who wants the village without the four-figure ticket.
