Chateau Clinet, Pomerol, 2017
Despite a challenging vintage marked by spring frosts, Château Clinet's 2017—composed of 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 72% new oak—shows remarkable depth and structure. The wine opens slowly, revealing vibrant red and black fruits: red currants, black cherries, plums, and cassis with touches of roses, yeast extract, wood smoke, and crushed rocks. On the palate, raspberry and boysenberry compote flavors mingle with anise and pain d'épices, with flashes of ganache, tar, and bramble through the finish. Medium-bodied with firm, grainy tannins and a taut, muscular palate. Best enjoyed 2024 onwards over the following decade.
