Chateau De Pez, Saint Estephe, 2016
The oldest wine estate in Saint-Estephe, now run by a Champagne house. Founded in 1452, de Pez was bought in 1995 by the Rouzaud family of Louis Roederer, the house behind Cristal, who modernized the cellar while keeping the appellation's feral, savory soul intact. The 2016 is a benchmark Left Bank vintage: a wet spring gave way to a long dry summer that produced Cabernet of precision and firm, vibrant structure. Roughly half Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, this is classic northern Medoc with iron, smoke, and dark herbs. Drinking well now, but it has the frame to reward another decade in the cellar.
