Chateau Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Medoc, 2018

One of Bordeaux's great insider wines. Poujeaux sits in Moulis-en-Medoc, just inland from Margaux, and routinely punches at the level of a 3rd or 4th Growth despite being a Cru Bourgeois. Acquired in 2008 by the Cuvelier family (also owners of Saint-Emilion's Clos Fourtet), the estate is run by Christophe Labenne with consulting from Stephane Derenoncourt. The 2018 vintage was one of Bordeaux's most powerful and concentrated of the decade, and Poujeaux delivers it in full: 55 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 percent Merlot, the rest Petit Verdot, aged in roughly one-third new French oak. Plush, structured, and built for a decade or more in the cellar, this is the kind of wine that quietly outshines far more famous neighbors.
