Cosse et Maisonneuve, Cahors Malbec 'Solis', 2022
Cahors has a reputation for dark, brooding Malbec, and Cosse et Maisonneuve set out to prove it doesn't have to be that way. 'Solis' is their more open, drink-me-now cuvee, made from Malbec grown on the lighter gravel-and-alluvial terraces above the Lot River in southwest France. Matthieu Cosse and Catherine Maisonneuve farm organically and biodynamically, and they vinify this one in tank rather than new oak to keep the fruit fresh and the tannins supple. The result is a Malbec with genuine lift and drinkability, deeply colored and savory but never heavy. It's the kind of honest, structured red that overdelivers on a weeknight and still holds its own at the table.
