CVNE (Cune), Rioja Monopole Clasico Blanco Seco, 2021
Here's a story we love: in the early 2010s a customer wrote in praising the "old" style of CVNE's Monopole — the oxidative, sherry-touched white Rioja the house had stopped making in the 1970s. So the team tasted a 1970s bottle, agreed, and pulled Ezequiel GarcĂa out of retirement (at 84) to help relaunch it alongside winemaker MarĂa Larrea. Monopole Clásico is the result: Viura from a 5-hectare Villalba de Rioja vineyard, aged eight months in old oak vats and topped up with Manzanilla from the Hidalgo family in SanlĂşcar — exactly as it was done in the 1960s. Some barrels even develop a thin flor. Nutty, saline, mouth-watering — a category unto itself.
