Dalia Maris, Piccolo Bianco, 2024
Dalia Maris is the personal project of Giampaolo Venica (yes, of Venica & Venica), named for his grandmother and built around old-vine native grapes in the hills of Friuli in northeast Italy. Piccolo Bianco is his second wine, a blend of roughly 80% Friulano and 20% Ribolla Gialla drawn from the same old parcels as his flagship. The vines run 60 years and older, the farming is biodynamic, and the wine is whole-cluster pressed, fermented with native yeasts, and aged in barrels from a top cooperage. Second wine or not, this is serious, textured Friulian white, saline and mineral with real orchard-fruit depth. If you want to understand why people get obsessed with Friuli's whites, this is a smart, honest place to start.
