Daniel Chotard, Sancerre Champs D'Alligny, 2020

This is the red side of Sancerre — and one of its quiet gems. Champs d'Alligny is a small Pinot Noir parcel planted decades ago by Simon Chotard's great-uncle and grandfather, on a south-facing slope where limestone topsoil sits over Kimmeridgian marl (the same geology that makes Chablis sing). Previously folded into the estate's Sancerre Rouge, it now earns its own bottling, and the 2020 is showing beautifully — five years on, the fruit has settled into a deeper register while the chalky minerality holds firm. A reminder that Sancerre Rouge, from the right hands, can compete with serious Burgundy at a fraction of the freight.
