Domaine Agisson, Pouilly-Fume La Belle Endormie, 2023
Hidden gem alert. Jean-Philippe Agisson spent ten years as cellar master for Alphonse Mellot at the iconic Domaine de la Moussiere in Sancerre — then was hand-picked by Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau to run the cellar at the legendary Didier Dagueneau estate. In 2017 he launched his own tiny project, just 1.5 hectares total, farmed organically along biodynamic lines, hand-harvested, direct-pressed, aged on lees in older barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered. "La Belle Endormie" — Sleeping Beauty — is his Pouilly-Fume, from a half-hectare plot of Portlandian limestone, and the name is a wink at the appellation that lives in Sancerre's shadow. This is Pouilly with serious ambition: lees-rich, textural, smoky and stony, the work of one of the Loire's most quietly pedigreed young vignerons.
