Domaine Clos de la Chapelle, Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins, 2023

Climb the steepest slopes in Pommard and you'll find Les Chanlins, a 1er Cru parcel sitting right on the Volnay border at roughly 300 meters elevation. Mark O'Connell, the American expat who founded Domaine Clos de la Chapelle in 2011, farms a small block of very old vines here, planted on limestone and pebbles rather than the heavier clays that give Pommard its reputation for muscle. The result is one of Pommard's prettier faces: classic depth and grip, yes, but framed by the perfumed lift Chanlins shares with its Volnay neighbors. Dark raspberry, wild strawberry and a violet wisp run through the 2023, with the kind of detailed, dusty finish that rewards patience. A few years in the cellar will do wonders.
