Domaine Clos de la Chapelle, Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Chapelle, 2023
This is the wine that gives the domaine its name. The Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru is a Volnay monopole - a walled parcel owned entirely by a single estate - tucked beside the small chapel on the slope; when American expat Mark O'Connell bought into the property in 2011 with Philippe Remoissent and Pierre Meurgey, they rechristened the whole project after this little stone-walled vineyard. Today it is farmed organically and biodynamically alongside the rest of the five-hectare estate, and it is treated, rightly, as the flagship cuvee. The 2023 is dense and perfumed in classic Volnay style: dark cherry, raspberry, violet, and a quiet undercurrent of spice and stone, with fine, polished tannins and the lifted acidity the vintage is known for. The longest, most layered red in the lineup; cellar it with confidence.
